Tall

File this under rants… Promise to make this quick.

Whoever decided the word tall was a good idea for a drink size was not thinking clearly. In fact, though I respect his current campaign for quality, I will say it was probably Howard Schultz’s biggest mistake. Period. For the last 3 years, this has boggled my mind… how the word tall could ever be used to describe the size of a latte. Especially when that size is actually small.

My friends, I’m going to stop here, but please, let’s all think more clearly.

  1. i love reading your posts, ryan. they make me smile.

two thoughts related. first, “tall” used to be halfway between “short” and “grande.” there used to be no “venti”(tm). i guess to my mind it sounded a little better in contrast to short. not that this excuses it by a lungo.

second, it seems to me that short, tall, grande and venti are designed to keep you off balance, like bright colored carpets and no windows in casinos. when you don’t know what to call each size you’ll order a tall, thinking you’re getting a Gi-Huge-Ic. Pay the price…get a tiny sip.

My two centavos. Good luck in Mpls.
